Launch of SaiSure – Fortified Ragi Malt for 2.5 million Govt. School Children of Telangana

Recognizing the crucial role of nutrition in combating anaemia and malnutrition, thereby promoting healthy growth among children, the government of Telangana aims to ensure that all government school students across the state receive a nourishing start to their day.

 

Going forward, 25 Lakh students of all government and local body schools across Telangana will be served hot and nutritious 250 ml “Ragi Java” as breakfast every alternate day. This Ragi Malt with Jaggery is fortified with nutrients and flavoured with other natural ingredients for taste to make it a wholesome breakfast.

This historic initiative was inaugurated by Smt. P Sabitha Indra Reddy, Hon’ble Education Minister of Telangana, respective district ministers, and MLAs on June 20th, 2023, to commemorate “Telangana Vidya Dinotsavam” as part of “Telangana Formation Day Decennial Celebrations,” also known as “Telangana Rashtra Avatarana Dashabdi Utsavalu”.

The much-awaited launch of the SaiSure Millet health mix took place on 24 and 26 May 2023 in the districts of Muzaffarpur and Munger districts in Bihar state. A total of 52,000 government school children will be benefited.

 

On May 24th, the launch event of SaiSure Millet health mix took place successfully at Haridaspur Middle School in the Kanti block of Muzaffarpur district. Under this morning nutrition program, about 25,000 government school children across 154 schools of Kanti block are provided this health supplement drink every Wednesday by Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust. The health mix contains ragi cereal fortified with minerals and vitamins along with jaggery.

 


Ragi or finger millet offers a bounty of nutritional benefits encompassing all the essential macronutrients – carbohydrates, fibers, fats, and proteins, along with a noteworthy level of key micronutrients – vitamins B, C, and E, and minerals to boost immune, skin, and hair health. Being a good source of natural calcium, Ragi strengthens bones in growing children. Ragi malt with jaggery is said to be a good medicine in the prevention of anaemia.

SaiSure Morning Nutrition program was launched in another union territory, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, on 21 April 2023 by Annapoorna Trust. With this recent launch, Annapoorna Trust has its presence in a total of 5 union territories and 23 states.


Nearly 1000 children in Centre Primary School (CPS) in Silvassa will receive SaiSure Multi Nutrient Health mix along with milk powder. A measure of health parameters like height, weight, and haemoglobin under the health profile test for 969 students of CPS Silvassa school was noted by Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), which operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. This is a case study that is done to study the impact of the health mix, and hence one test is conducted prior to the launch of SaiSure Multi Nutrient Health Mix and one more, 3 months post the launch.

Annapoorna Morning Nutrition Program was launched in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh on the auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on 06 April 2023 at BSA (Basic Shiksha Adhikari) office. ‘SaiSure Ragi’ variant will be served to nearly 1,200 government school-going children across 8 schools.

 

 

Ragi, or the finger millet, has a very good nutritional profile, encompassing all the essential macronutrients – carbohydrates, fibres, fats and proteins, along with noteworthy level of key micronutrients – vitamins and minerals. It has negligible levels of cholesterol and sodium, to promote heart wellness. In addition, ragi contains considerable quantities of vitamins C and E, to boost immune, skin and hair health. Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust in collaboration with Geno Pharmaceuticals launched the Morning Nutrition programme in North Goa on 20th March 2023. A total of 85 students from two schools, Government High School Shirodwadi – Mulgao and Government Primary School Shirodwadi – Mulgao, will receive Morning Nutrition every day.

 

The children of today are citizens of tomorrow. It is the fundamental right of every child to receive good nutrition, good healthcare, and good education. Annapoorna Morning Nutrition programme works at the grassroots level in the area of child nutrition, and the impact has been remarkable in terms of higher attendance, lower dropout rates, improved health parameters, a marked increase in academic performance, attentiveness, and many more.

National Nutrition Month is being celebrated across the country in the month of September to mark the fight against malnutrition. Various programmes to spread awareness on issues related to malnutrition like stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia and low birth weight in children are organized across the country. POSHAN Abhiyaan – National Nutrition Mission, was launched by the government to achieve improvement in nutritional status of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers. 

 

 

Annapoorna Trust with its vision of, Let No Child Go to School Hungry Ever, continues to address the nutrition needs at various rural hinterlands of India, aligning with the theme of National Nutrition Month.

A total of 620 children in 9 different schools of Karimnagar district will receive ‘Raagi Cereals Health Mix’ as their morning nutrition. This Health drink contains significant amounts of vitamin C and E. It is also high on B complex vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus. It is considered one of the best foods for growing children.

The State Youth Festival, 2021-22 was inaugurated at Adichunchanagiri Mutt in Nagamangala taluk, Mandya on 05-Jan 2022 in the auspicious presence of Swami Nirmalanandanatha ji – Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Mr Basavaraj Bommai – Honourable Chief minister of Karnataka, Ms Sumalatha Ambarish – Member of Parliament, Mr Narayana Gowda – Minister of Youth Empowerment and Sports, And Sericulture Department, Mr Araga Jnanendra – Minister for Home Affairs, Mr C N Ashwath Narayan – Minister of Science and Technology, Mr R Ashok – Minister of Revenue, Mr Suresh Gowda – MLA Nagamangala, Dr Shalini Rajneesh IAS – Additional Chief Secretary at Planning Department, Government of Karnataka to commemorate two events together, the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and the 75th Year of Indian Independence.

To mark this memorable event, Amrutha Mahotsava community development Scheme in 750 villages was envisaged previously by the chief minister, Mr Basavaraj Bommai during his Independence Day speech in 2021. The planning and statistics department led by Dr Shalini Rajneesh has surveyed 750 villages with the help of NSS volunteers. Innovative solutions like that of SaiSure multi-nutrient health mix by the Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust would be the nutrition partner. This is proposed to be given to pregnant mothers, pre-school & school children. Many other innovative schemes and solutions would be implemented in these villages to raise the standard of living and overcome poverty levels in these villages. 

As part of the inauguration, SaiSure multi-nutrient health mix was given to the school going children on 05-Jan 2022 by Swami Nirmalanandanatha ji – Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Mr Basavaraj Bommai – Chief minister of Karnataka & Sri Narayana Gowda – Minister of Youth Empowerment and Sports, and Sericulture Department. Swami ji personally inspected the SaiSure stall along with state youth minister put up by Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust. He was keen to know the nutritional aspect and variants available in SaiSure. Further state youth programmes led by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Karnataka is proposed to be held from Jan 12 till Jan 18 across various schools and colleges in the state of Karnataka.

LAUNCH OF MULTIPLE INITIATIVES TOWARDS ‘END MALNUTRITION’

It is said Children are the greatest asset of a nation as they are the future of tomorrow. A country can prosper tomorrow only if its children are healthy today and for that it is imperative to ensure the health of the mothers for only a healthy mother can beget a healthy child. Unfortunately today, India is home to about 50% of under-nourished children of the world with an alarming rate of infant mortality.

Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust, since its inception in November 2015 has made significant efforts in providing nutritious breakfast to nearly 2.5 lac children in Government and Aided schools. Alongside, ‘SaiSure’, a malt based multi-nutrient supplement was also introduced in Government schools complementing the ‘Ksheera Bhagya’ scheme in Karnataka. This innovative and easy to prepare nutrition drink is an answer to the issue of hidden hunger which is the lack of micro nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, iron, and calcium.

On 31st October morning, a special programme was held at Vidhana Soudha, the state legislative assembly of Karnataka. The aim and objective of the programme was to undertake collective measures to ‘End Malnutrition’ in the country.

At the entrance of the iconic Vidhana Soudha is written the slogan ‘Government Work is God’s Work’. But what even the Governments have not been able to accomplish, God has shown us the path executing and implementing projects of love for all of us to replicate.

The programme was attended by people of all walks of life; Annapoorna Volunteers, Doctors and Health professionals, Administrators and Heads of institutions, Politicians including several Cabinet Ministers of the state and the Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri B S Yeddiyurappa.

After the welcome address, the programme began with the invocation prayer by children who are the beneficiaries of the Annapoorna Breakfast programme from Doddabelle village. After this, Dr. Satish Babu, Chairman of the Scientific Committee for Nutrition gave an overview of the various programmes and initiatives undertaken like the Annapoorna Programme, the Divine Mother and Child Health Programme and the SaiSure supplement. He outlined the impact of these initiatives since their inception and highlighted the reinforced efforts that would go into the same.

A mobile application called ‘Chirayu’ was launched by the Honorable Chief Minister. This App will greatly help in recordingthe vital health parameters of children and mothers during the health screening and regular medical checkups.

Thereafter, Chief Minister launched the expansion of SaiSure programme across other districts of Karnataka in a phased manner intending to cover 10 lac children by November 2020. A remodeled version of SaiSure for Toddlers and Pregnant Women were also launched catering to the needs of children aged 1 to 6 years and also expecting mothers.

The keynote address was delivered by the Chief Minister, Sri B S Yeddiyurappa. He applauded the efforts of Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust and Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust to combat malnutrition and promised all required support by the Government to eradicate the same.

It was indeed a classic scenario of the Sarkar, Samaj and Sansthan coming together to strive for societal welfare and benefit.

The Annual Report of the Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust for the year 2018-19 was presented after which the programme concluded with the State and National Anthems being rendered by Sai’s Angels Brass Band of the Muddenahalli Campus.

This scheme was jointly introduced by “Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust” and “Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust”.
